What Is A Personal Security Guard?

People are more concerned than ever about their safety these days. For this reason it's no wonder the call for security guards has gone way up in recent years. This means security guards for businesses and stores, more gated communities and the security that they require as well as more people looking for the services of a personal security guard.

What is required of a personal security guard? When are they needed and who requests them?

The job of a personal security guard is usually different than that of a mall security guard or other types of guards. While those other guards usually work a regular shift daily, a personal security guard is more likely to work different hours and days, depending on the need of his clients. His position is most likely more like a freelance guard, who works as the need arises.

Of course some people do hire personal security guards to work for them full time, such as in the case of a gated community, or even a family, but generally they are called upon to attend events or other occasions that last a short period of time.

We've all seen the celebrities on the news with their entourage of security guards following their every move, and, of course those are personal security guards, too. However, most “normal” people hire a guard, not to lead them through city streets, so much as to attend parties or other gatherings that they have planned. The are just required to stay and look around for the hint of any trouble and most especially to protect people if anything should happen.

Another time people might hire a personal security guard is when they go on vacation. Especially if they are going to a destination where they don't feel completely comfortable, it can be very reassuring knowing that you have someone there whose job it is to look after your safety and security.

So what is expected of a personal security guard? This will vary from client to client, of course, but generally, they are meant to be at the event or in the place designated. Before any job the client will sit down with the guard and discuss their strategy and their personal needs for security and what they expect of the guard.

Not all guards are armed, but they should be trained in self defense and know about avoiding conflicts and how to calm a situation that has escalated too high. They may have taken some special training courses and should have some type of experience in protection. Of course, one of the keys is that the client feel comfortable with the guard, and feels sure that he understands his responsibilities and is a professional worker.

In our days you can never be too careful, and you can never be sure what to expect. If you're hosting an event that will include much of the public, or even a smaller affair, consider hiring a personal security guard to help bring a sense of safety and security to your event.
